Winemaker Weekend: Mike Dunn of Dunn Vineyards

Special Event

A Weekend with Mike and Kara Dunn

July 7-10, 2022
Location:Brush Creek Ranch
Event Summary

An unforgettable weekend of wine events imports the flavors of the mountains in Napa to the peaks of Wyoming. Join winemaker Mike Dunn of Dunn Vineyards at the picturesque Brush Creek Ranch to enjoy the deep flavors and chewy tannins of the thick-skinned grapes grown on the distinctive Howell Mountain AVA. The AVA’s boundary starts at an elevation of 1400’ so even when it is cool and foggy on the valley floor, it is sunny and breezy up on the mountain. Since 1979, Dunn Vineyards has been a hands-on team, on the crush pad, in the cellar, and out farming their 42 acres to bring you the Howell Mountain Cabernet: deep concentration, bold, massive, ultra rich and elegant.

*Wine Events available to Brush Creek Ranch lodging guests only. Book by May 15, 2022. Minimum length of stay may apply. Accommodations and events are subject to availability and schedule is subject to change. To reserve or inquire for details, call 307-327-5284.

Meet Mike & Kara Dunn

While he calls himself a “cellar grunt”, Mike actually oversees the production of the wine, works with the team in the vineyards, and manages the overall operation. An interest in experimenting with other varietals lead Mike and his wife Kara to purchase some old vine Petite Sirah from Randy and start their own label Retro Cellars. Before becoming a full-time winemaker, Mike pursued his other interests. He graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 1988 with a degree in Anthropology (surfing) and later owned a bike shop in Calistoga. He and Kara have two grown children who are currently on their own paths. But he wouldn’t be surprised if, like their father, they end up farming grapes on Howell Mountain

Kara Pecota Dunn is a second generation Napa Valley vintner. As the daughter of Robert Pecota of Robert Pecota Winery in Calistoga, and the wife of Michael Dunn of Dunn Vineyards on Howell Mountain, she has been involved in the wine industry since her childhood. After receiving her BA from UC Davis in International Relations in 1990, she worked her way up to the role of GM of Robert Pecota Winery, and started Retro Cellars in 2003 with her husband. She is the mother of two adult children, an avid tennis player, yogini and Mah Jongg enthusiast.
