Event Summary

Guest naturalist and wildlife ecologist, Doug Wachob, returns for a series of hikes and conversations about wildlife, wilderness, and ecology. Mr. Wachob engages guests with captivating and educational storytelling, connecting them to surrounding nature and discussing the importance of land and water preservation and resource conservation.

Monday, August 1

6:45-7:45am Sunrise wildlife viewing tour – Ranger drive

9:00am-12:00pm “Because They Fly!” Birds of Platte River Valley and Brush Creek Ranch

  • Observe and identify songbirds, waterfowl, and wetland birds
  • Discover the remarkable adaptions of birds for flight

1:30-4:30pm Explore the “Sagebrush Sea”

  • Learn how sagebrush plants survive in a harsh environment
  • Explore ecology of plants and animals in the sagebrush ecosystem

Tuesday, August 2

6:45-7:45am Sunrise wildlife viewing tour – Ranger drive

9:00am-12:00pm Discover the Wildlife of Brush Creek Ranch

  • Observe animals large and small
  • Learn the ecology and adaptations of Brush Creek wildlife
  • Explore tracks and sign – possibly take home a plaster cast of a track
  • Starts with a short indoor exploration of wildlife of Brush Creek

1:30-4:30 “Water is Everything” - the forest habitats of Brush Creek Ranch

  • Investigate how water influences forest location
  • Learn the adaptations and location of cottonwood, aspen, and conifer forests
  • Observe the animals and birds associated with these habitats

Wednesday, August 3

  • Observe the pronghorn behavior and adaptations to the sagebrush ecosystem
  • Explore the grasslands and sagebrush habitats on the Brush Creek ranch
Meet Doug Wachob

Former Interim Dean at the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources at University of Wyoming, Mr. Wachob received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Minnesota and Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in Zoology and Physiology from the University of Wyoming. His academic background is in wildlife ecology with an emphasis on the ecology of human dominated landscapes with a career focused on conservation, educating students about the natural world and training educators to use the outdoors as an effective educational environment.

He is an avid outdoors person with strong interests in outdoor recreation including backpacking, hiking, hunting, and most anything related to wilderness. He was formerly Associate Executive Director at Teton Science Schools and formerly Director of Conservation Programs for The Nature Conservancy - Alaska.
